IELTS or OET for UK nurse registration?

Both tests are accepted by the NMC. Compare their score rules, format, existing results and preparation options.

The NMC accepts both IELTS Academic and OET Nursing. If either works for your application, compare the task format, your existing scores, available test dates and the preparation you are likely to need. NMC2

An exam that feels more familiar is not necessarily the cheapest route for you. Equally, a widely advertised test is not automatically the most efficient choice when you already possess usable evidence.

Make the choice in this order

QuestionWhy it comes before “which is easier?”
Do I already have acceptable English evidence?Another test may add no benefit
What exact requirement am I trying to meet?Registration, admission and immigration are separate checks
Is my existing result close enough to use under an applicable combination rule?Discarding it prematurely may create unnecessary work
Which tasks cause difficulty in an unfamiliar sample?Preference and demonstrated performance are different
What support would address that difficulty?A course and a few corrected tasks solve different problems
What does the complete route cost?Registration is only one part of the total

The NMC evidence-route guide comes before course shopping. Keep a separate application record for another country or organisation rather than assuming the UK result transfers automatically.

Compare tasks, not marketing adjectives

For IELTS Academic writing, official practice includes a visual-information task and an essay. That is a concrete task distinction you can test using the British Council's free samples. BC1

For OET, use the profession version required by the receiver. For NMC, the relevant version is Nursing. NMC3 Do not assume that professional familiarity alone guarantees a particular score. Familiar subject matter and clear written communication are not the same capability.

A useful comparison session is simple: attempt one unfamiliar task from each option under the published conditions. Afterwards, describe the obstacle without awarding yourself a speculative band. Did you misunderstand the instructions? Struggle to select relevant information? Run out of time? Know your point but lack the language to express it?

Those observations make a better purchase brief than “I need the easiest exam.” They can identify whether you need task explanation, general language work, individual feedback or broader preparation.

Compare the whole cost, without invented probabilities

Create one row for each route: booking, travel, accommodation where necessary, preparation, feedback, result services and any known rescheduling charges. Record actual quotes in their original currencies. A dollar symbol without a currency code is not a safe basis for comparison.

Do not add a hypothetical retake multiplied by an invented pass probability. You can instead show a base budget and a separate contingency amount. This makes uncertainty visible without pretending to predict your outcome.

A cheaper examination can become the more expensive plan when switching discards useful preparation or requires travel. A more expensive course is not necessarily better if you only use one small part of it.

Three practical decisions

You already have usable evidence. Complete the evidence process; no new course follows automatically.

You have a narrow writing gap. Compare OET feedback services or IELTS feedback services, depending on the accepted test you choose. Buy a defined feedback output, not the promise of a guaranteed future score.

You struggle across tasks or cannot organize your preparation. A structured course may be appropriate, but compare the actual teaching and assessment included. Access to hundreds of videos is different from someone responding to your work.

Questions that do not have universal answers

Which test do employers prefer? Ask the named employer about its own requirement. That answer does not override NMC or another authority.

Will one test work for both registration and a visa? It may, depending on the exact route and evidence rules. This page is not a visa eligibility determination.

Should nurses always choose OET? The job title alone does not establish the right purchase. Existing evidence, task performance and other applications can change the decision.
