NMC English requirements: every accepted route

The English evidence the NMC accepts for nurse registration, including tests, recent practice and English-taught qualifications.

The NMC accepts several forms of English evidence. An approved test is one option; an English-taught pre-registration qualification or recent registered practice may also qualify when the detailed conditions are met. NMC1

This guide covers the English-evidence decision for UK NMC registration. It does not determine your complete registration, immigration, employment or university eligibility.

Which route should you examine first?

When the test route is appropriate

NMC currently accepts IELTS Academic and OET as its English tests. A different test's reputation, CEFR level or use in another country does not add it to this list. NMC2

Use the IELTS score guide or OET score guide to identify the exact skill targets. The two examinations are alternatives, not interchangeable sets of component scores.

An existing result deserves attention before a new booking. Record the test name exactly as it appears on the report. Then record the date and each skill separately. “IELTS 7” is not an adequate application record because it leaves the individual skills unspecified.

Keep three decisions separate

First: is this an accepted evidence type? A result from the wrong test cannot be repaired by averaging it differently.

Second: does this evidence meet the English rule? Scores, dates, completeness and verification can matter even after the test type is correct.

Third: is the wider application complete? Passing the English-evidence check does not replace professional qualification, identity or other registration requirements.

This separation prevents two expensive mistakes: preparing for a test that is not appropriate, and assuming that a sufficient English result means there is nothing else to submit.

Build a usable application record

Write one short record for the route you intend to use:

Target: NMC registration. Evidence route: testing / qualification / recent practice. Exact evidence: title and issuing organisation. Relevant dates: examination, qualification or practice dates. Official policy: saved source link and date checked. Documentation: what is available and what is not yet issued. Verification: what the receiver needs to access the evidence.

Do not upload identity documents, real patient notes or certificate numbers to a public discussion forum just to ask which route applies. An adviser can usually discuss the rule without seeing an unredacted document.

When preparation is the next step

Preparation is relevant only after a real skills gap has been identified. A writing-only problem calls for a different purchase decision from difficulty across every skill. See course versus targeted feedback.

A missing transcript, unclear evidence route or inaccessible result-verification permission is an administrative problem. Buying more practice questions does not solve it.

Common questions

Does studying in English mean I never need a test? No blanket conclusion follows. Your qualification and supporting evidence need to meet the applicable route conditions.

Can a recruiter decide that my certificate is enough? Recruiter guidance can help organize an application, but the NMC's requirements remain the relevant rules for its registration process.

Should I change tests after one disappointing result? First identify the exact gap and review the accepted evidence you already hold. Then compare the format and support costs in IELTS versus OET for UK nurses.

What to have ready

For a test result, keep the certificate and its verification details. For a qualification or recent-practice route, start with the NMC's current route page and gather the documents it names before paying for another test. The official English-language requirements page is the place to check current conditions.
