For IELTS Academic, the NMC requires 7.0 in listening, reading and speaking, and 6.5 in writing. Record every skill score; the overall band alone is not enough to check the requirement. NMC2

Read the four skills first

Suppose a hypothetical report shows listening 8.0, reading 7.0, writing 6.0 and speaking 7.0. The strong listening number does not fill the writing gap. The useful preparation question is specific: what is preventing the writing task from meeting the needed standard?

Now suppose the result is listening 7.0, reading 7.5, writing 6.5 and speaking 7.0. Those components meet the table. The next question concerns the rest of the evidence conditions, not how to obtain an even higher number just because an advertisement emphasizes band 8.

These examples illustrate reading the table. They are not full registration determinations.

A practice estimate is not an official result

A teacher or software tool may supply an estimated band. Treat that as feedback on a practice performance, not a new certificate and not a promise about the next examination.

For writing, the official assessment covers the response to the task, organization, vocabulary and grammar. A grammatically polished rewrite can still fail to answer what was asked. BC2 This is why a good feedback purchase should explain decisions in the original work rather than merely replace it with fluent prose.

Do not change the test name to a generic label

Copy the exact examination and version from your report and compare it with NMC's current documentation. Do not substitute a General Training result merely because its score is high. Do not assume that a single-skill retake or another score-reporting mechanism is accepted just because the test provider offers it; NMC's general combining guidance requires complete sittings. NMC2

Delivery-format and exceptional-route questions should be resolved using NMC's linked IELTS-specific policy. This page deliberately does not issue a blanket approval for every format that carries the IELTS name.

Two results need a different assessment

Two imperfect results do not automatically create one acceptable result. Combination rules include limits on dates and low component scores. Do not copy an OET floor into an IELTS calculation: the scales and thresholds are different.

Use the official NMC calculatorNMC4 for the exact combination. A failed combination does not necessarily invalidate one otherwise usable standalone result, nor does it settle whether a non-test evidence route applies.

Turn the result into a preparation brief

A useful brief says: “I need feedback on Academic Writing Task 2. Please explain the task-response and organization problems in my own attempt and identify a revision to practise.” An unhelpful brief says only: “Make this band 9.”

When selecting support, check whether one purchased correction means one task or both writing tasks. Check whether clarification and revised submissions are included. Our writing-service comparison and cost guide explain those differences.

Combining two IELTS results

The NMC allows two complete IELTS Academic sittings when one sitting reaches 7.0 in listening, reading and speaking, and 6.5 in writing. Every score across both sittings must also stay at or above 6.5 in listening, reading and speaking, and 6.0 in writing. The two tests must meet the NMC's date rules, and one-skill retakes cannot be used.

For example, listening 7.0 / 6.5, reading 6.5 / 7.0, writing 6.0 / 7.5 and speaking 7.0 / 8.0 meets the score pattern. A listening score of 6.0 in either sitting does not. Check the NMC IELTS Academic page before relying on any result.
