Free official IELTS writing practice

Use British Council Academic Writing tasks for a full attempt, review and revision cycle before buying extra materials.

Use official samples to understand the task, then preserve your own first attempt. Reading a model answer and recognizing its quality is not the same as producing a response independently.

The British Council's Academic Writing practice pageBC1 provides official sample-task links, downloadable materials and example responses. It distinguishes those resources from additional preparation associated with a booking. Access details were checked on 18 September 2026.

Start with the correct writing version

The page linked here is for Academic Writing, not a substitute for General Training preparation. It covers visual-information writing and an essay. Use the material appropriate to the examination you are taking, not simply the first page titled “IELTS writing.” BC1

Our NMC IELTS guide addresses a specific professional requirement. Other receivers can impose different evidence rules. Selecting the right preparation starts with selecting an accepted examination.

A useful first session

Open the official task and read its instructions. Make a separate copy of your response, not the source material. Record whether you used a timer, dictionaries, model answers or outside feedback. These conditions explain what the attempt actually demonstrates.

Complete the task before opening a model answer. Afterwards, compare the decisions: what information was selected, how the answer developed, and whether each part of the prompt was addressed. Do not treat the model's vocabulary as a list of expressions that must appear in every response.

Compare reasoning rather than memorize sentences

Suppose your paragraph makes a claim but provides no explanation. The productive question is how the model connects a claim to support. Memorizing its first sentence does not show that you can build that connection on a different topic.

Likewise, adding elaborate vocabulary does not repair an answer that misses the requested comparison. Keep a short list of reasoning and organization problems alongside language corrections.

The official assessment explanationBC2 is a better reference for the dimensions being evaluated than a single commercial promise about how to reach a high band.

Use sample scores correctly

An official scored sample describes that sample. It does not mean your answer receives the same result because it has a similar length or paragraph count. A self-assessment can identify questions to investigate, but it is not a certificate.

When seeking feedback, include the prompt with your own attempt. A reviewer cannot meaningfully discuss how well an answer meets a task without knowing what was asked.

What to do after feedback

Save the untouched original. Revise it with notes explaining the changes you accept. Then attempt a different task without the revised document beside you.

This creates three useful pieces of evidence: the initial problem, your response to feedback and the independent follow-up. They are more informative than a folder of polished answers whose production conditions are unknown.

When paid support adds something

Paying may be reasonable when you cannot identify the main problem, do not understand existing feedback or need an individual explanation. It is not necessary simply to access another question when suitable official practice remains unused.

Compare writing services by their output and usable cost. A full course, a one-off correction and an automated response are different services.
