TOEFL score conversion and university acceptance

A converted score does not override a university’s test, date, score-age or reporting rules.

A TOEFL conversion table compares score scales; it does not decide whether a university accepts the test. The institution still sets its own test, date, score and reporting conditions.

TOEFL iBT introduced its 1–6 scale, in half-band increments, from 21 January 2026. ETS describes a transition during which a comparable 0–120 overall score is also provided, and explains that receiving institutions set their own requirements. Those reporting arrangements do not compel an institution to accept a test. ETS

Three questions a conversion table cannot settle

Does the institution accept this examination? A table comparing score scales does not establish that the receiving organisation recognises the credential.

Does it accept this version and test date? A familiar product name can survive changes to an examination. The same brand label therefore cannot do the work of a dated policy.

Do my component results satisfy the requirement? An overall relationship does not automatically supply the right thresholds for individual skills or waive a minimum in one of them.

Treat those as separate checks. A convincing answer to only one is not a complete answer.

A concrete example: Oxford

The Oxford TOEFL guide documents the university’s current restriction on tests taken from 21 January 2026. That illustrates the problem without requiring a universal score-conversion calculator. Even an excellent new-scale result cannot, by arithmetic alone, remove a restriction on the test itself. OXG OXU

Build an acceptance record before a comparison table

For each target, record:

FieldWhy it belongs in the record
Receiving organisation and application scopeSeparates a programme decision from a general directory claim
Exact test and delivery formatAvoids treating every variant as interchangeable
Test date and relevant intakeMakes a dated rule usable
Published overall and skill conditionsPrevents an overall score from hiding a component issue
Official source and date inspectedMakes the conclusion inspectable
Remaining ambiguityPrevents a missing statement from becoming a fabricated yes or no

This is an editorial decision aid, not a new authority over the institution.

What a responsible comparison page should say

A useful table labels the origin and purpose of its figures. It identifies whether they are issuer-published score relationships, a receiving institution’s actual thresholds, or merely an illustrative calculation.

The words approximately comparable should not quietly turn into accepted for admission in the next column. Likewise, a historic threshold should not be relabelled as current because a page title has the current year.

When a source does not supply a new-scale requirement, preserve that gap rather than reverse-engineering a number and presenting it as institutional policy.

Applying to several places

Imagine two fictional programmes. Programme A explicitly accepts your examination and publishes a threshold. Programme B lists only an older version and has not clarified the new test. A conversion table may help you understand the scales, but the combined plan remains unresolved for Programme B.

The sensible outcome is not “you cover two out of two.” It is “one documented route and one unresolved route.” That distinction is more useful than a confident percentage.

Before buying preparation

First settle whether the test can be used for the actual target. Then inspect existing evidence, the skills you need to develop and the support available. Comparing courses for an unaccepted examination puts the purchase before the eligibility question.

Use the pre-booking guide for that sequence and the recognition guide for the terminology behind it.
