CELTA vs TEFL: what are you comparing?

CELTA is one named qualification; TEFL covers many courses. Compare assessment, teaching practice, workload and employer requirements.

CELTA is a named Cambridge qualification; TEFL is the wider field of teaching English as a foreign language. A useful comparison pairs CELTA with one specific alternative course.

Neither a higher price nor a larger advertised hour total can make that comparison for you. Start with the requirement and the work you want the course to teach you to do.

What Cambridge specifies

The CELTA course has at least 120 tutor-contact hours, with additional independent preparation and assignment work. It includes assessed teaching practice and written assignments. Cambridge offers full-time or part-time routes, delivered face-to-face, online or in a mixture of formats. CELTA

Those specifications directly answer an important question: online study is not automatically an alternative to CELTA. An online CELTA and a self-paced course without live assessed teaching are different products, even though both use a computer.

Compare five things

FactorQuestion to answer
Receiver requirementDoes the employer require a named award or define acceptable alternatives?
AssessmentWhat must you demonstrate, and who evaluates it?
Teaching practiceAre you teaching actual learners, and under what observation?
ScheduleWhich hours are fixed, and what independent work surrounds them?
Full costWhat must be paid to complete the required route?

The observed-practice guide explains why watching lessons, teaching peers and assessed teaching with learners should not be treated as one feature.

Why a shared level does not settle equivalence

A framework groups qualifications by level; it does not turn all awards in a group into the same certificate. GOV.UK lists multiple qualification types at Level 5. GOV1

An alternative may be acceptable to a receiver, but the evidence is the receiver's rule or decision about that alternative—not the arithmetic of matching a level number. Nor does a diploma label automatically override a named certificate requirement.

Where CertTESOL fits

Trinity CertTESOL is another named initial teaching qualification with its own specification and validated providers. It should not be confused with every provider-created course using the word TESOL. TRIN

When comparing CELTA, CertTESOL and another course, compare actual teaching and assessment rather than ranking the acronyms. Employer requirements, practical availability and schedule can legitimately point different people to different choices.

When to investigate CELTA first

Start there when a target explicitly names it, when its assessed-teaching structure matches the development you want, or when you need to understand that recognised award before considering alternatives.

Do not select it solely because someone promises that it guarantees a particular salary. The qualification can be relevant to a role without determining the employment decision, pay, visa permission or your suitability for every teaching context.

When another specific course may fit

An alternative can be reasonable when the intended receiver accepts it, its curriculum and assessment address your needs, and the schedule and full cost are more workable. A course is not unsuitable merely because it is less expensive; the missing question is what the lower price includes and excludes.

When an alternative lacks required assessed teaching, determine whether an accepted add-on exists and what the complete route would cost. Do not buy a cheap first component only to discover that the intended qualification cannot be assembled as assumed.

Plan for the real workload

A course advertised by contact hours still requires work outside class. Avoid booking a demanding timetable on the assumption that live sessions are the only commitment. Examine the centre's dates and attendance expectations before comparing prices.

For self-paced alternatives, make the same honest plan. Flexible access can help, but it does not replace time spent attempting assignments and using feedback.

Decision

Named requirement: begin with that award or an explicitly accepted alternative. Development need: compare what you will actually teach and receive feedback on. Budget constraint: compare the full acceptable route, not the cheapest unrelated certificate.
