How to check a TEFL accreditation claim

Find out who awards the qualification, who regulates or reviews it, and whether employers in your target market accept it.

A TEFL accreditation claim should name the organisation behind it and the exact course or award covered. Check the awarding body, regulator or quality-assurance organisation, then ask whether your target employers accept the qualification.

This guide explains a checking method. It is not a blanket certification of every provider mentioned elsewhere on this site, and an absent record in one register does not prove a course is fraudulent.

Four organisations can have different jobs

The training provider teaches or supplies access. The awarding organisation issues the named qualification. A regulator or quality-assurance organisation has a defined remit. The employer or receiving institution decides whether the evidence fits its own requirement.

Sometimes one organisation performs more than one role. That does not make the roles interchangeable.

The official GOV.UK service links to regulated awarding-organisation and qualification searches, with distinctions between jurisdictions. Use that route for an Ofqual-related claim rather than treating a logo on a seller's site as independent verification. GOV2

A verification record you can actually use

Write down the following fields:

FieldGood evidence identifies
Exact courseCurrent title and version—not only the brand
Final awardThe title printed on the completed credential
Awarding organisationFull name, not merely “accredited internationally”
Claimed external statusRegulated qualification, institutional accreditation, curriculum approval or another specified status
RecordIdentifier and official register or awarding-body page
ScopeWhich product, institution or activity the record covers
Dates and statusWhether it applies to the current award and enrollment
AcceptanceThe named receiver's own requirement

A registry match becomes meaningful only when the record describes the qualification you are buying. A recognized awarding organisation can issue more than one award; its name alone does not identify the exact course.

What to do with a provider claim

For example, The TEFL Academy's product page names Qualifi and Ofqual for its Level 5 offer. That is a useful lead for verification, not an independent certificate issued by this website. TA1

Keep the distinction in your notes: “provider states” versus “matched to an official record.” When the wording or qualification title does not match, do not quietly convert uncertainty into a green approval badge.

Our course comparisons attribute provider claims and do not declare that every regulation or accreditation relationship has been independently audited.

Separate regulation from teaching practice

A formal qualification level does not, on its own, tell you who you will teach. Examine the assessment specification separately. Read what observed teaching practice means before assuming that quizzes, peer microteaching and assessed lessons with actual learners are the same.

Likewise, membership in an association, an award from a review website and permission to issue a specific regulated qualification are different claims. Ask which one is being made.

Separate verification from acceptance

A verifiable certificate can still be unsuitable for a particular job. A receiver might require a named award, a certain assessed-practice structure, prior education or additional experience. A seller's broad recognition statement does not answer each requirement.

Send the actual course title and specification to the receiver before relying on an equivalence claim. Ask a narrow question: “Does this named qualification satisfy the teaching-qualification part of this role's requirements?” Do not ask merely whether the brand is legitimate.

A reusable acceptance message

I am considering the course titled [course title], leading to [award], issued by [awarding organisation]. Its published specification describes [assessment and observed-practice details]. Does this satisfy the qualification requirement for [specific role or programme]? Please identify any additional teaching-practice or qualification condition that this award would not meet.

The bracketed fields are deliberately part of a reader worksheet, not unfinished website research. They capture an individual's target, which no general article can know.
