OET speaking practice can mean a timed mock test, a coaching session or targeted feedback. Check which format helps with the part of speaking you need to improve.
This guide is not a personal speaking assessment. The merchant example was inspected on 18 September 2026; we have not attended a session or measured its quality.
Four formats, four different purposes
| Format | What to use it for | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Independent recording | Notice your own pauses, unclear wording and unfinished explanations | An authoritative test score |
| Partner role-play | Practise responding to another person's questions | Whether the partner applies official criteria accurately |
| Assessed mock session | Obtain feedback on a sample performance under the provider's conditions | Guaranteed performance on a different task |
| Coached session | Pause, discuss a problem, try a repair and repeat | A full examination simulation if the task is repeatedly interrupted |
The right choice depends on the question you want answered. “I want a score” is less informative than “I lose the thread when the other person interrupts; I need to practise responding without restarting my whole explanation.”
A current package example
Benchmark's public speaking page lists a 20-minute, two-role-play mock for $25, or $30 with a recording. It also lists a 60-minute speaking training session for $45. The dollar currency code was not confirmed in this inspection. The provider distinguishes mock feedback from longer coached practice. BS
These are seller-stated formats and prices, not a quality ranking. A scheduled session's duration is not all speaking time: introductions, preparation, feedback and technical setup may occupy part of it.
Decide whether the recording is useful to you
A recording is useful when you will revisit it with a concrete question. Mark where the listener's concern changed and how you responded. Did you answer the question actually asked? Did a technical word remain unexplained? Did you keep speaking when a clarification was needed?
Do not collect recordings merely as evidence of study hours. A short, focused replay followed by another attempt can make the material actionable. This is a suggested practice routine, not a measured treatment effect.
Before purchasing, establish who can access the recording, how it is delivered, how long it remains available and whether downloading is permitted. Avoid discussing identifiable real patients in a practice session.
Ask how the feedback works
Will feedback be verbal, written, recorded or some combination? Will it identify a specific point in the role-play? Can you ask for an explanation or try the passage again? Does the session end with one next practice task?
“Pronunciation needs work” leaves a broad problem. Identifying a phrase that was difficult to understand, explaining the ambiguity and giving a short practice action is more concrete. A promised numerical estimate should not substitute for that explanation.
Scheduling can decide whether a package is usable
Confirm the time zone shown at booking, equipment requirements, cancellation and rescheduling conditions. Do not assume a missed appointment becomes a credit automatically. A shift-worker's schedule can make flexibility more useful than a small headline discount.
Book enough time before your examination to apply the feedback. Purchasing another mock immediately after receiving the first one may repeat the same problem without leaving time to work on it.
When to choose a broader course
A speaking session will not directly fix a separate reading or writing problem. When several parts of your preparation lack structure, compare whole-course support rather than accumulating unrelated bookings.
When one skill alone is the issue, the targeted-support decision guide can help avoid buying material you already possess.
